Social Networking: Advantages and Disadvantages

Social networks are websites that act as online communities whose members can create profiles, become friends with other members, and post photos and comments and their walls.  Companies, universities, non-profits, and individuals can all join social networks.

Advantages of Social Networking:

  • Keeps people in touch with friends even if they are geographically far apart
  • Allows people to share photos and videos with friends and family
  • Keeps people informed about events going on in their universities or neighborhoods
  • Allows companies to keep in touch with customers and potential customers
  • Helps people who have shared interests to create a sense of community even if they live far apart

Disadvantages of Social Networking:

  • Overemphasis on online communication over in person verbal communication
  • Older customers and clientele may be left behind
  • Privacy issues
  • Misrepresentation: companies and people online may not be who they seem to be
  • Online bullying and cyberstalking
